Rain or snow?
Rain or snow? That is the question. I'm writing this blog a day early as
I may not have much time tomorrow. However, everything seems to rather depend
on the weather. I have a couple of appointments tomorrow but I won't be
venturing out in the car if it snows. I could walk to my afternoon appointment
but my meeting in the morning would mean driving up an extremely steep hill. I
suppose that's what you get when you move to a place called 'High'
Wycombe.
It's been a busy week catching up after the festive season. It's been a
good week as I like to be busy. My tarantula sale is going well. I have cleared
quite a few in preparation for new stock at the end of the month. I have plans
for new spiders, scorpions, stick insects and other interesting bugs. It
very much depends on what is available. I was working on my computer one
evening earlier this week when I heard what sounded like an alarm going off. I
rushed into my bug room next door to my office and realised that it was my male
Giant Burrowing African cricket calling to the female. They tend to spend
almost all their time underground and are very secretive. I don't think I have
heard him since the summer and I don’t recall it being that loud. Goodness
knows what the neighbours thought! I grabbed my phone and started to video. I
intend to put it on Facebook when I get time. It's not a great video as I was
rushing to get to the tank before he disappeared but you do get to see and more
importantly hear him. I have a black-out cover around the tank so that I can lift
it and have a peek at the crickets without disturbing them too much. I can see
the female in her burrow but I can't tell if she has any eggs. I live in hope!
Hubby and I went Christmas shopping for each other yesterday. We missed
most of the sales but it was a lot less crowded than before Christmas. I bought
him a new camera (he can take better pictures of my bugs), well that's what I
thought but as you all know by now he doesn't share my passion at all. He
bought me an Apple Watch. It looks fantastic, I'm picking it up this afternoon
as it needed to be ordered in for collection today. I did try it out in the
Apple Store and it's amazing! I just love Apple and it means I won't need my
iPhone attached to me at all times. The iPhone 7 is a bit big to wear on my
belt and it does look very silly under a jumper. I did point out to my hubby
that he will have to learn how to use it and then teach me. I'm very
enthusiastic but although I try, all this technology just doesn't come
naturally to me. If it isn’t living and breathing I’m pretty clueless.
We also now have an iDoorBell (called iRing), it’s brilliant but a bit
spooky. I got totally fed up with not hearing the doorbell when I am in my bug
room. We have tried everything, wired-in, cordless, you name it we have tried
it but I always ended up finding a note through the door either saying “we
tried to deliver and you weren’t in” (I was!) or we have left your parcel at
“number whatever”. It is really frustrating so before Christmas we ‘invested’
(they are really expensive) in a doorbell that links up with all our Apple
products. Can’t miss it now! My iPhone, hubby’s iPhone, both iPads and my Apple
Mac computer all chime loudly. When we are out we can now answer the doorbell
as there is a video link. It was so odd talking to the postman and being able
to see him on the path when we were out in Luxembourg over new year! The
trouble is you don’t want to tell people you are away but the delivery guys
must wonder what is going on when you say that you can’t come to the door at
the moment. Since I discovered Amazon we do get a lot of parcels and of course
running a postal business means I rely on the post so I’m very pleased we
bought the bell. It is more than a bit ‘big brother is watching you’ though.
Well it is now Friday morning, ran out of time as usual! We do have snow, not that much but enough to stop me driving. I just hope it goes away before Monday and doesn’t have an effect on my posting days next week. Thankfully orders have picked up since Christmas and I am back to advertising my Ginny’s Jungle parties again. I went to a very good local reptile shop this week and they kindly put some of my leaflets out and a local magazine have put together a free advert for me this month. There are some very nice people around! I have just looked out of my office window and it is snowing again. Roll on the Spring! My Apple watch wasn’t there when I went to collect itL but should be arriving in store today (just hope I can get there).
