Common Name: King Baboon Tarantula
Scientific Name: Pelinobius muticus
Status: Captive Bred
Country of origin - Kenya
Habitat: Ground dwelling
Suitability: Very large, adults tend to be aggressive
My Opinion:
The King Baboon is indeed a king among pet spiders and I have heard it said that no tarantula collection is complete without one! They reach a huge size but my goodness they take a long time to get there. I honestly think these are the slowest growing tarantulas that I have ever come across (and I have kept a very large number of species over the years). The spider is generally a rusty red colour or a fairly bright orange (especially after moulting). The younger spiders seem to be fine and non aggressive but with size, seems to come aggression and the adults can be very nasty. They sometimes hiss and seem to like chewing up tank ornaments or anything that gets in their way. This species likes to burrow so they are unlikely to stay out on show as many other large species tend to do.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It is difficult to give a size for the spiders as stock is constantly changing. Generally, the small size is a spiderling up to 1cm body length (small will be SMALL), juvenile is a grown on spiderling with a body length of 1cm to 2cm, medium 2cm to 4cm and a large is 4cm to fully adult (but a lot depends on the species!)
I am happy to send a photo of any size tarantula spider that you are interested in, just email me!
All spiders are unsexed unless stated.
