Lots of new bugs this week
Lots of new bugs this week. Some pretty spiders have come in, both spiderlings and adults, lovely scorpions and beautiful fruit beetles from the Cameroon. Hopefully the beetles will breed (there were already a few larvae in the box with them) and some of the scorpions look very fat, possibly pregnant? It seems the bugs love this weather, as do I, everything seems to be reproducing, I have baby scorpions, spiders, millipedes, cockroaches, grasshoppers everywhere. My bug room is looking pretty full, I have had to move the arboreal spider jars to a lower shelf as they were getting a bit too hot near the window. My nephew (a roofer) and husband re-roofed the bug room a couple of years ago when we moved everything indoors from the log cabin outside. My nephew said at the time that it was worth putting in as much insulation as possible and he was right. I was thinking of saving money in the winter as I didn't want the heat going straight out through the roof but I remember him saying that it would also keep the room cool during the summer. It has been incredibly hot at times this week but I haven't needed to do anything more than pull the curtains and leave the inner door open to my office.
It has been a week full of technology for me! On Tuesday a great guy came over to bring me some spiders and also set me up on Instragram. He is an absolute whizz kid on it, I did my best to glean the essential information that I needed. I don't think I'm quite there yet but I have managed one post on my own and I didn't go too wrong. However the little mistake didn't go unnoticed and I was promptly sent me a personal guide by email, which was very nice of him. I must admit that I haven't had any time to look at it again since but I will sit down and try again at the weekend. Facebook is still difficult for me but I will continue to work on it. I am getting lots of messages on there now and I try to reply (when I can). Facebook is on my "to do" list today, along with 'bath the dog', both jobs I have been putting off but cannot stall any longer. I also have a multitude of spiders to feed today and this evening I am going on a glow worm and bat walk with a local nature group. Yesterday the forecast for this evening was heavy rain but thankfully this morning the forecast is showing only cloudy weather. I do hope we see something, I go on an awful lot of wildlife walks and see nothing (especially snake hunts).
I had a lovely day last Saturday when I took part in a one day, wildlife first aid course at Tiggywinkles Wildlife hospital. The staff were great, the weather was good and I learnt an awful lot. In the afternoon we had a behind the scenes tour of the areas that the public don't generally get to see. The dedication given to rehabilitating so many sick and injured wildlife was awe inspiring and then releasing them back into the wild is the icing on the cake. We learnt how to feed orphaned animals and watched a demonstration of how to feed tiny hedgehogs with a pipette. It is nonstop when the animals are small and in the case of baby birds, feeding every fifteen minutes during daylight is required. Now that is dedication! I would love to help out with fostering there but at the moment, I can't cope with everything and everyone in my life as it is! I just adored all the foxes, they look like Teddi only she is bigger but the colouring and mannerisms are much the same. I would love to foster foxes but it is so important not to let them become tame and I would have a hard time controlling my urge to cuddle them. Evidently foxes and squirrels both become tame very quickly so it is really important not to handle them any more than is necessary.
I'm still looking into upgrading my website and weighing up the pros and cons and I am also considering getting an Apple Mac computer as I might actually find it easier to use, it will obviously be similar to my iPhone and iPad. I hate not being able to do anything with my photos on the desk top without my hubby's help. Things are so much more straightforward on my iPhone and iPad. Still if I go ahead with the upgrade can I afford a new computer too?
Anyway better get on with it all, this beautiful weather can't last forever. I must admit to a slight moan about it being too hot the other day. I set off down the motorway to collect crickets and other supplies from west London and discovered that the air conditioning wasn't working in my car (it's on hubby's list for the weekend). I was cooked by the time I got there and may have mentioned this to one or two people but I soon got a grip and pulled myself together. I must never moan about the heat, I absolutely hate the cold. Whatever was I thinking!
